Fast-rising Kenyan rapper Kapitani hits number one on Kenya’s YouTube Music trending chart with “Kitemeo,” produced by Capo – reaching 168,000 views within two days of dropping.

The record did something rare. It gave Nairobi’s streets a phrase that escaped the song entirely and entered everyday conversation. “Kitemeo” – referring to khat, the stimulant widely chewed across urban Kenyan communities – became the shorthand for the whole experience the song describes. And that is how street music works when it truly catches fire.

The writing is messy on purpose. Kapitani moves between English, Kiswahili, and Sheng without warning – dropping references to Korogocho, black coffee, blunts, nduthi, wife drama, day-to-day money pressure, and the desperate need to escape it all.

So the song reads like a conversation you might accidentally overhear outside a shop. The specific Nairobi vocabulary is what makes it impossible to mistake for music made anywhere else.

The hook does the work efficiently – one minute wrestling with where the day’s money comes from, the next talking about fighting with the wife before escaping with the boys. That relatable cycle of stress and release is what turned “Kitemeo” into a cultural moment rather than just a trending song.

MP Babu Owino even took a photo with Kapitani – which says everything about how quickly the song crossed from the streets into the mainstream conversation. Spotify already shows over 72,000 monthly listeners building off a catalogue that includes “Chubwi,” “Niwashe,” and “Hii Mwaka” from 2026 alone.

This is Nairobi street music at its most authentic. Go stream “Kitemeo” and tell us – does Kapitani deserve the number one spot?
