Harmonize reunites with Tanzania’s beloved vocalist Marioo on “Tangazo,” track four from his sixth studio album “31.
The title translates to “announcement” in Swahili – and Harmonize uses it to make the most relatable public declaration in Bongo Flava this year. He has decided to quit alcohol. But the way he arrives at that decision is what makes “Tangazo” genuinely funny and human.
Drunk texting an ex, making emotional decisions he would never make sober, promising to replace beer with soda and juice – the exaggerated self-awareness in the writing makes the record feel like a confession between friends rather than a carefully crafted song concept.
Marioo slides into the record with his smooth delivery and signature Bongo Flava style, adding a second Tanzanian voice that complements rather than competes with Harmonize’s performance. Their chemistry carries years of shared experience in the same music ecosystem. So the collaboration sounds lived-in rather than arranged. Both artists clearly enjoyed making this one.
Marioo’s credentials also add real weight here. Tanzania’s most listened-to artist on Spotify Wrapped 2024, a Rolling Stone Afropop recognition, and “Hakuna Matata” claiming Tanzania’s most streamed song that same year – he arrives on “31” with as much momentum as any featured artist on the album. But “Tangazo” does not feel like a strategic placement. It feels like a Tanzanian music moment between two people who genuinely wanted to make something together.
