Kumasi rapper Yaw Tog plays on Asakaa and Amapiano in “AKATAPIANO,” a new single that follows his July release “2FLY.”
The title is the first hook. It mixes the name of Ghana’s Asakaa movement with Amapiano, the South African sound that has travelled across Africa. Yaw Tog has not explained the idea in detail, but the wordplay already says something. He wants to stay in touch with the wider African scene while keeping his Kumasi roots front and centre. The song also continues his move beyond the drill style that introduced him to international listeners with “Sore.”
SectorMadeIt produced the record, and that is an established link. The two have worked together before, so the chemistry is easy to hear. The track runs two minutes and 57 seconds. It stays compact, and it arrived with an official video through TogLife Records.
The early numbers back up the interest. “AKATAPIANO” debuted at number 16 on a Ghanaian daily music chart, and it gathered more than 130,000 plays on Audiomack within days. Yaw Tog also carries a following of roughly 678,000 on the platform, which gives every release a ready audience. That kind of start suggests fans were waiting for new material.
For rap lovers who like to see a young Ghanaian artist stretch his sound without leaving home, this one is worth a spin.
