Maskandi outfit Amabongwa opens its project “Ingwe” with “Emkhuze,” a 4:37 song about home and a nod to Mkuze.

The title points to Mkuze in northern KwaZulu-Natal, and the song stays close to that place. Early write-ups say it explores home, rural roots, long journeys, and belonging, with introspective folk melodies carrying the story. So the opener works like a map, and it tells the listener where the group’s heart sits before the other songs begin.

The sound stays organic. Intricate acoustic guitar fingerpicking sets the base, and melodic concertina lines add a warm layer. Sharp percussive shakers keep the rhythm moving, while a smooth indigenous bassline rolls under the traditional groove. The mix leaves plenty of room, so native cadences and layered backing harmonies come through clearly. Amabongwa also wrote and produced the song, and the group plays the acoustic guitar itself, which keeps everything in one pair of hands. The tempo sits around 123 beats per minute.

The project runs ten tracks, and “Emkhuze” plays the role of a gateway. “Ingwe,” the title track, comes second, and “Sizinsizwa” follows at 4:27. “Ungobese” and “Iphimbo Lakho” arrive soon after, with “Izinto zami,” “Amathemba,” and “Ishort cut” filling out the set. Starting with a long, rooted song gives the whole album a calm, grounded start.

Maskandi has always valued storytelling that comes from real places. Amabongwa continues that habit with grounded stories, textured vocals, and a clear wish to keep native traditions alive. For fans who like Zulu folk music with real warmth, this is an easy opener to settle into.
