Sam Fender and Olivia Dean turned a solo album cut into a record-breaking duet with “Rein Me In,” and the song’s slow climb says as much about the material as the numbers do.

Fender wrote it for his third album People Watching, then Dean added a verse from the female perspective after the two performed it together at his London Stadium show in June 2025 . The duet version arrived shortly after, and the track spent 35 weeks climbing the UK Singles Chart before finally hitting number one in February 2026, the longest consecutive run in the top forty before reaching the top spot in British chart history .

What makes the record work is how the two voices split the story. Fender’s verses carry the guilt and the urge to bolt, begging not to be “reined in” because stopping means feeling the pain he has been numbing . Dean’s response is softer but firmer, telling him there is nothing brave about walking alone and asking him to come home to her tenderness . The arrangement sits on a jazzy frame with piano and saxophone underneath, so the conversation never turns into a shouting match .

The song kept going after that first number one. It won Song of the Year at the 2026 BRIT Awards, then returned to the top and eventually spent nineteen non-consecutive weeks at number one, overtaking Frankie Laine’s 1953 record for the longest-running UK number one single ever . Fender told BBC Radio 1 he was speechless, then thanked Dean directly, saying it would not have happened without her .
