American R&B singer Mariah the Scientist links up with Kali Uchis on a smooth new record titled “Is It a Crime.” The title sounds like a guilty question, so the mood is flirty and a little risky.
Mariah the Scientist has built her name on honest, late-night love songs. Kali Uchis brings a dreamy, Latin-tinged pop edge. So the pairing looks like a smart match for two voices that love a slow, sultry groove.
The production stays soft and hazy. She sounds relaxed and a bit cheeky, so each line plays like a private confession. Her melodies glide, but her words carry the real bite.
Kali Uchis answers with a silky, laid-back delivery and gives the song a second side. The lyrics seem to ask if wanting someone this badly is wrong, though neither woman sounds sorry. Because the hook repeats, the question sticks in your head.
The two voices blend without a fight, and the beat never rushes. It’s sweet and sultry, and it plays well on repeat.
Play “Is It a Crime” on a late drive or a slow night in. Then send it to the person you’re thinking about.
