American pop star Olivia Rodrigo brings some holiday romance to the music scene with “take me home (4 christmas),” her first-ever Christmas single.
Instead of singing about presents and decorations, Olivia focuses on something many people experience during the festive season – wanting to spend Christmas with someone they love. She sings from the perspective of a woman hoping her relationship is serious enough for an introduction to the family.
There is a funny side to the story too. Meeting your partner’s parents for the first time can be stressful, especially when Christmas celebrations are involved. Olivia captures that excitement and nervousness while making the song feel playful rather than overly sentimental.
Dan Nigro handles the production, bringing together pop-rock sounds, festive bells and a groovy rhythm. He also co-wrote the song alongside Olivia and Amy Allen. The recording runs for 2 minutes and 57 seconds.
The official music video adds another layer to the story. Olivia appears alongside Cynthia Nixon and Saturday Night Live comedian Ben Marshall. Nixon plays the mother of Olivia’s love interest, while Marshall takes the role of her boyfriend. Their family Christmas scenes include holiday activities and an awkward introduction.
Interestingly, the song draws inspiration from The Waitresses’ 1981 Christmas classic, “Christmas Wrapping.” Olivia contacted the original songwriter, Christopher Butler, about the connection.
Released through Interscope Records, the single also received a limited-edition physical release with another Christmas song, “miss this christmas,” as its B-side.
