South African Maskandi artist Mphile “Sminofu” Gumede arrives with a culturally charged new single, “eMachobeni” – and the record has already put him directly in the crosshairs of the Zulu royal house.
The song references a viral incident involving King Misuzulu kaZwelithini and Queen Nomzamo Myeni at her eMachobeni royal residence in Jozini. So Sminofu did not just write a folk record. He stepped into active royal controversy. As a result, the Zulu royal house spokesperson formally summoned him to appear before the palace with his chief to explain the release.
That context gives “eMachobeni” a weight far beyond the music itself. But the track earns attention on its own terms too. Sminofu builds the production around fast-paced Zulu rhythms and driving acoustic guitar patterns – the classic Maskandi framework his audience already knows and trusts. The vocal delivery stays rooted in traditional storytelling rather than chasing a commercial crossover.
