Mavin Records star Ayra Starr goes fully solo on “Midnight in New York,” a heaving dance record from her third album “Starrgirl.”
The city choice matters here. Ayra could have set this record anywhere, but New York carries specific weight for her right now. She signed a management deal with Roc Nation in 2025, and her career has increasingly straddled Lagos and the American music industry ever since. So placing a record inside a late-night New York atmosphere feels less like a random backdrop and more like a reflection of where her world currently sits.
The song itself leans into pure sensation. “We don’t talk, we dance,” she instructs over a heaving beat that trades conversation for movement entirely. That line captures the whole mood of the track – dancing, smoke, and connection without the need for words. It is a different kind of intimacy than the vulnerability she shows elsewhere on the album.
What ties “Midnight in New York” to the rest of “Starrgirl” is Ayra’s recurring theme across the album. On “Dance,” she declares “Feels good to be who I am,” and that same self-possession runs quietly through this record too. She is not performing confidence here. She is simply living inside it.
