South African producer Cooper SA teams up with Tyler ICU, Dr Peppa, Optimist Music ZA, and Colkaze for “Phata Phata,” closing out another chapter of “One Day in Tembisa.”
The title itself carries weight in South African music culture. “Phata Phata” nods to a phrase with deep roots in the country’s musical history, and choosing that reference for an Amapiano record connects the genre’s current wave to something older and more culturally significant. It is a small detail, but it says a lot about how intentional Cooper SA is with naming across this EP.
The collaboration itself brings together a mix of familiar and slightly different energy. Dr Peppa and Optimist Music ZA add production textures that push beyond the log drum-heavy sound dominating much of “One Day in Tembisa,” while Colkaze rounds out the vocal work alongside Tyler ICU’s now-familiar touch. That blend gives “Phata Phata” a fuller, more layered feel compared to some of the more stripped-back cuts on the project.
As one of the later tracks on the EP, “Phata Phata” also plays a specific role. It shows Cooper SA is not just repeating the same formula from start to finish – he is willing to bring in fresh names and slightly different textures to keep the project moving rather than settling into a single sound.
