Zanefa Ngidi and Phindile Buthelezi swap the usual maskandi grit for something lighter on “Happy Birthday.”
Exactly what it says on the tin, a birthday tribute. Not every maskandi record needs to carry weight or history behind it. Sometimes it’s just somebody’s day and the song says so plainly.
Guitar’s still doing the work here, same picked pattern this duo leans on. A bit brighter though, less mournful than “Awuthi Veku.” Percussion picks up slightly too, more celebratory bounce to it than their last one together.
Zanefa Ngidi sounds looser on this, warmer even. Less of that rough edge, more just genuine good wishes coming through. Fits the occasion, no need to force grit into a birthday song.
Phindile Buthelezi answers back the same way she always does, filling the space Zanefa Ngidi leaves open. Her part here feels more like well-wishing than counterpoint though. Whole thing plays like two people genuinely happy for somebody.
