Zanefa Ngidi brings in Masinga for “Ikhekhe Lami,” and this one circles back to something with a bit more heart.
Ikhekhe lami translates to “my cake,” which sounds playful but probably isn’t literal here. Could be a metaphor for something precious, something worth protecting. Masinga joining changes the dynamic a bit from the Phindile Buthelezi pairing too.
Guitar again, obviously, this crew doesn’t stray far from that maskandi foundation. Tempo sits a little slower than “Happy Birthday,” more room to sit with each line. Percussion pulls back, letting the guitar and vocals carry most of the weight.
Zanefa Ngidi sings with real tenderness here, softer than the grit on “Awuthi Veku.” Something about “my cake” as a phrase makes the whole thing feel intimate, almost protective. Hard to say exactly what’s meant without more context, but the emotion reads clear enough.
Masinga adds a grounded, steady presence alongside him, not competing for space. More support than counterpoint, unlike how Phindile Buthelezi usually answers back. Different chemistry entirely from Zanefa Ngidi’s other collaborations.
“Ikhekhe Lami” doesn’t over explain itself, and that’s fine. Whatever’s precious enough to call it cake, Zanefa Ngidi clearly means it. Some things don’t need spelling out.
