South African singer-songwriter Mthandazo Gatya delivers his “Nuru” album – a nine-track project that moves through soulful melodies, heartfelt storytelling, and the spiritual depth his catalogue has always promised.
“Nuru” means “light” in Swahili – and that concept anchors the whole album. Each of the nine tracks approaches the theme from a different angle. So the project never feels repetitive despite staying within a consistent emotional and sonic world. Some records carry the warmth of gratitude. Others sit in more contemplative, searching territory. Together they build something complete.
The album opens with “Gogo” – a warm, inviting first statement that immediately sets the tone. “Talk” follows at track two, showcasing Mthandazo Gatya’s storytelling range. “Ziphi” at track four pushes into more direct emotional territory. “Izibusiso” – meaning “blessings” – arrives at track six as one of the project’s most spiritually grounded moments. Then “Muntu Wam” at track eight shifts into warmer, more intimate romantic terrain before the album closes.
The featured artist list also shows deliberate selection. Nomfundo Moh appears – her soulful voice sitting naturally alongside Gatya’s Amapiano and Afro-soul framework. Afrobrotherz and Sdala B contribute to another track’s production depth. Nhlonipho and Ab Crazzy add different textural dimensions. Each feature serves the album rather than decorating it.
