Sakara legend Yusufu Olatunji and His Group deliver a classic Yoruba praise medley on “Medley (Part 1),” a fan favourite.

Sakara music is the Islam-influenced Yoruba sound built on the small round Sakara drum, the Goje violin, and nasal, flowing vocals. Olatunji did more than most to popularise it. He joined the Abibu Oluwa band in 1927, and he later built a huge following across southwestern Nigeria. So this medley comes from the source, not from a copy.

The record runs for around twenty minutes. That length is the point. A Sakara medley strings praise songs together without a break, and it salutes patrons, friends, and social clubs one after another. Because of that, the listener gets a long, steady groove instead of one quick hit.

The numbers show how loved it is. “Medley (Part 1)” ranks as his most-played track on Spotify, with well over 370,000 streams. Older listeners return to it for memory, while younger ones find it through playlists and family parties.

Olatunji also kept performing after an accident left him in a wheelchair, which makes the energy here even more special.

For lovers of Yoruba heritage music, this one is worth a full sitting.
