Kayole-born Kenyan rapper Toxic Lyrikali trades his hard street sound for romance on “Mbebe,” a melodic Afro-fusion single.
It is a clear shift from the aggression of records like “Chinje” and “Sick.” This time he leans on a mid-tempo Afro-fusion rhythm and a softer, melody-led approach. The beat stays smooth, so his affectionate delivery sits in the front. Toxic Lyrikali has not left his street roots behind, but the grit now sits in the language, not the volume.
The story is simple and sweet. He mixes Sheng and Swahili to tell a love story about loyalty and commitment. He wants his partner to be his one and only, and he is serious enough to bring her home to meet his family. He also urges her to ignore the “maripota,” the gossips, and to focus on what the two of them share. So the song has a playful edge, even while the message is sincere.
Mboka Doba, his own label, put out the single, and Africori handled distribution. An official music video came with it, which gives the new side of his image a visual home.
This follows his hit “Hongo Ya Karao Vol. II,” which reached number one on YouTube Music’s Kenya trending chart. Fans who loved that record will see a wider range here, and newcomers get an easy way in.
Fall for “Mbebe” and tell us – is Toxic Lyrikali better as a lover boy?
