Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan team up on the “Expectations” remix, Rodrigo’s first remix and Roan’s first guest feature.

The song first appeared on Rodrigo’s third album, “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love,” where it sits at track 12. The remix is the album’s fourth single, after “Drop Dead,” “The Cure,” and “Stupid Song.” It stays close to the original. Roan replaces the second verse with her own, joins Rodrigo on the hook, and belts ad-libs near the end. She also changes the lines to describe a mediocre female suitor, which gives the story a fresh twist. Roan told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe she likes adding her own spin, and critics have praised their vocal chemistry.

The friendship behind it runs deep. Roan opened for Rodrigo on both the “Sour” and “Guts” tours and sang backup on “Lacy” and “Obsessed.” Both artists work with producer Dan Nigro, who makes a cameo in the video. Roan also played Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields festival in August, so the remix feels like a natural next step.

The video steals attention. Bardia Zeinali directed a retro game-show parody, with sets inspired by “Family Feud” and “Hollywood Squares.” Talking Heads frontman David Byrne appears as host Johnny Johnson of “The Big Expectations Show.” Rodrigo plays several characters, and Roan faces her on “Sister Squabble.”

Fans waited for a Roan collaboration for a long time, and this one delivers it with humour. For pop lovers, it is a playful, easy replay.
