Taylor Swift turns an awkward phone call into a pop single with “Patient Zero,” a track that treats an ex like a virus worth warning people about.
She wrote and produced it with Max Martin and Shellback, and it landed as one of four new songs on *The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore*, the deluxe edition of her 2025 album .
The premise came from a real conversation. Swift said a friend told her group about being contacted by the new girlfriend of an ex, asking whether she had dealt with the same behavior. Everyone in the room had a version of that story. So Swift wrote from the perspective of the ex on the phone, the one who already survived the relationship and can see the pattern repeating .
What makes it land is how Swift plays it. The production pairs light synths with a groove that never gets heavy, so the conversation stays almost casual even as the warnings pile up . The bridge is where she drops the mask, describing a man who loves how people love him rather than loving them back . It is a specific portrait, and the specificity is what makes it travel.
The numbers arrived quickly. “Patient Zero” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Swift’s sixteenth chart-topper, and it held the top spot on the U.K. Singles Chart for three weeks running . The video, which she directed and premiered at the MTV VMAs, added another layer to the rollout .
Press play on “Patient Zero” and tell me whether this phone-call angle works better than the usual breakup song.
