London singer-songwriter Sienna Spiro puts stubborn love front and centre on Die On This Hill, from her debut album Visitor.

The song grew out of a phrase Spiro has heard all her life. She says she always wanted to write it, and it went through many versions before landing. Stubbornness is the point, though she has said it is not only about romance. Fans have read it as a song about an absent parent or a friend, too.

This is her breakout record. The track reached number 9 on the UK singles chart, and TikTok has used it more than eight million times. She also played it on The Tonight Show, so the song has travelled well beyond the app. The single has since gone Platinum.

Piano and strings build slowly underneath, then the arrangement saves its biggest push for the closing stretch. The vocal carries the weight, while critics keep reaching for Adele and Amy Winehouse. A Guardian review of Visitor called Die On This Hill soaring, though it was less sold on the rest.

Spiro has opened for Sam Smith and Teddy Swims, and Visitor is built around her fear of impermanence. Run Die On This Hill back and tell us below – does it hit harder as romance or friendship?
