South African Maskandi outfit Amabongwa and songwriter unveils “Ingwe,” a ten-song album of Zulu storytelling.

The title means “leopard” in isiZulu. That strong cultural image also gives the project a distinct character. So “Amabongwa Ingwe” announces its identity before the first song plays.

The album looks at daily life, love, and people’s problems. Expressive vocals, traditional rhythms, and poetic delivery carry each story. Maskandi still does what it has always done. It also tells stories, expresses emotion and comments on life in song.

Ten tracks make up the project. It begins with “Emkhuze”, followed immediately by the title track, “Ingwe”. “Sizinsizwa” and “Ungobese” come next. Then “Iphimbo Lakho” and “Emakhoneni” keep the stories moving.

Meanwhile, the back half carries “Umntomyama,” “Yenina Matombazane,” “Dali,” and “Phenduka.” Together the ten songs run about 42 minutes. So the album stays compact and focused.

The title track sets the tone. The lyrics of “Ingwe” lean on ancestral roots, fearless perseverance, and overcoming challenges. That symbolism is transformed into a comforting anthem via touching proverbs and familiar Zulu storytelling. Also the delivery is commanding in tone and chant-like in weight.

Amabongwa has built a catalogue of full projects. Earlier releases include “Emcitsheni” and “Indaka.” Still, “Ingwe” feels tighter at ten songs. Nhlakanipho Mbongwa wrote the material, so the voice stays consistent across the project.

Listeners new to Maskandi can start with the title track. Those who already love the genre can run the full album from top to bottom. So either route shows how the genre blends old rhythms with direct, personal lyrics.
