Jack Harlow has brought back a project title that played an important role in his early career. The American rapper has released Sweet Action II, a seven-track EP that arrives six years after the original Sweet Action.
This new collection takes a different route from the rap sound many people first associated with him. Harlow spends more time exploring R&B, particularly the sounds that dominated the late 1990s and early 2000s. There is plenty of romance in the subject matter, but the songs also touch on jealousy, attraction and the difficulty of moving on.
One guest appearance that deserves attention is “TOO SOON,” featuring legendary R&B singer Babyface. The collaboration brings together Harlow’s newer musical direction and the experience of an artist whose songwriting has influenced generations of R&B musicians. Babyface also helps give the song its emotional character.
The opening track, “SIGNORA,” introduces the romantic direction of the project. Other songs include “SHE GETS ME,” “610 MAGNOLIA,” “HOLD BACK,” “PRESSURE” and “MOVE ON.” Interestingly, all seven songs are relatively short, with the entire EP running for just over 15 minutes.
The project also revisits the spirit of Harlow’s original 2020 EP, which featured his breakthrough single “WHATS POPPIN.” However, he sounds more interested in exploring relationships this time around.
Released through Atlantic Records, Sweet Action II gives Harlow another opportunity to show a different side of his artistry.
