Zimbabwean gospel singer Dorcas Moyo joins Feli Nandi on “Mashoko,” the first song released from her 11th album “Korona Yeimvi.”
The title means “words,” and the song looks at how much weight they carry. It is also associated with the name “Mashoko Avo” that means “their words.” This message is from Shona wisdom. Words can build bridges, but they can also destroy confidence, with gossip, slander, betrayal. Moyo and Nandi call on the audience to respond to hurt with patience, wisdom and faith. They tell us to trust God to reveal the truth, not to let someone else’s opinion determine our peace.
The sound brings two voices together. Dorcas Moyo, who is based in Mutare, brings passionate gospel vocals. Feli Nandi, the Zimbabwean singer and songwriter known for her Afro-fusion style, adds a smooth, jazz-inspired delivery. A rhythmic arrangement balances emotional depth with a contemporary Zimbabwean feel. Nandi also sings about words in her own earlier song “Mashoko Angu,” so the theme fits her well.
The song is already working. Moyo says it is getting airplay and buzz on social media, and an official video is out. The 10-track album, “Korona Yeimvi,” is nearly finished, with videos planned for “Musaenda Kure” and “Moyo Wakusuwa.” Moyo will also hold a launch show at the Mutare Showgrounds later this month, with names like Alick Macheso, Leonard Zhakata, Hosiah Chipanga, and Fungisai Zvakavapano on the bill.
For gospel listeners who like a message with a modern edge, this collaboration offers a good start.
Weigh your words with “Mashoko” and tell us – have words ever hurt you more than actions?
