Nigerian singer J’Dess draws from her Igbo roots on “Chinyere,” a soulful Afrofusion record featuring highlife band The Cavemen.

“Chinyere” is a classic Igbo name that carries the idea of a gift from God, and the song puts that culture at the centre. J’Dess co-wrote it with Kingsley and Benjamin Okorie. Then The Cavemen produced it, so live instruments shape the whole sound.

That mix works well. The band gives the record a strong highlife foundation, while J’Dess brings R&B and soul through her vocals. So the song feels old and new at the same time. It also builds on “Chi Efo,” their earlier link-up, which started this working relationship.

The Cavemen have spent years keeping highlife alive without turning it into a museum piece. They won Best Alternative Album at The Headies for “Roots,” and that respect shows in how they handle this track.

J’Dess was born in Lagos and raised in Apapa, but her family roots sit in Enugu State. That background explains why the song feels so personal. “Chinyere” also arrives ahead of her seven-track EP “ALA,” which means “Earth,” so it works as a taste of what is coming.

Stream “Chinyere” and tell us – is highlife the sound Nigerian R&B has been missing?
