Nigerian singer-songwriter Kunmie teams up with the ever-versatile Wizard Chan on “Unfiltered,” a highlight collaboration off his debut album “22.”
The coupling makes more sense than it sounds. Wizard Chan has built his career on a sound rooted in Ijaw cultural identity, spiritual introspection and raw emotional honesty – records like ‘Earth Song’ and the ‘Healers Chapel’ album showed an artist who always says exactly what he means. So for someone who has made their whole identity about being authentic, coming on a record called “Unfiltered” with Kunmie just feels natural.
Throughout, Kunmie exhibits his emotive vocal style and heartfelt lyricism. But Wizard Chan’s singular delivery is what makes the collaboration most memorable: his presence alters the emotional temperature of the record to something more atmospheric and soulful. The production is smooth and unhurried, allowing both artists enough room to breathe and explore the themes of authenticity, vulnerability and self-expression the writing reaches for.
It is a full debut project that deserves a place in “22” and it is “Unfiltered.” The album is already off to a strong start with “5AM” with Phyno and “Gorgeous” with Lojay surpassing one million streams on Spotify. So this record has an audience primed, not starting from scratch. But “Unfiltered” also brings something the other collaborations on “22” don’t have – a rawness and spiritual weight that only Wizard Chan’s involvement could deliver.
This track duly rewards that patience for fans who found Kunmie thru “Arike” and have been waiting on the full album experience.
