South African Maskandi artist Mancinza opens his 14-track album “Guga Mzimba” with “Ikhaya Lami,” joined by Onezwa Mchunu and Somnyama.
The title translates to “My Home,” and that phrase carries the entire weight of the record. This is not a dance-floor filler placed first out of habit. Instead, Mancinza uses the opening slot to set the emotional tone for everything that follows across the full project, choosing longing and belonging over an easy hook.
That choice shows in how the collaboration comes together. Mancinza leads with his familiar storytelling voice, staying grounded and unhurried throughout the verses. Onezwa Mchunu then brings a soulful lift to the chorus, while Somnyama adds another emotional layer without pulling focus from either of them. So the song moves like a shared conversation rather than three separate performances stitched into one file.
What gives “Ikhaya Lami” its pull is how specific the feeling is. Anyone who has left home for work, or missed family from a distance, will recognize the ache underneath the melody immediately. Mancinza does not need elaborate lyrics to reach that place. He simply lets the traditional Maskandi instrumentation carry the sentiment, and the warmth comes through naturally.
As the first track on “Guga Mzimba,” this one tells you exactly what kind of album you are about to experience – press play and see if it pulls you back to your own idea of home.
