South African Amapiano producer Mid9t has brought together Benzoo, Epic Music, Gwitsi, Officixl RSA, and De Papzo on a high-energy new single titled “Stop and Go.”
Six names on one Amapiano record sounds crowded on paper. In practice, though, this group has history that makes the collaboration feel natural rather than forced. Mid9t, Benzoo, and Officixl RSA have been circling each other on releases for a while now – appearing together on “Jab Jab” featuring Scotts Maphuma and Bob Mabena, and on “Mabalabala” with Mellow & Sleazy. So “Stop and Go” is not these artists meeting for the first time. It is a working collective returning to familiar territory with a new idea.
Gwitsi and Officixl RSA have also collaborated previously on “VRR” alongside Mid9t, while De Papzo appeared alongside several of these same names on “Step By Step.”
The overlapping collaboration history means “Stop and Go” carries the kind of comfort and creative shorthand that usually produces records with genuine groove rather than technical exercises.
