South African act Natiey Lepaka rolls out a five-man squad on a lively new record titled “Bjaleni.” The title seems to point to beer in Sepedi, so the mood sounds like a weekend session.

Patron West, Jojo Manjaro, Gallarbas, Steel Bosh and Fuego all land on the credits. Drinking songs are a big part of township nightlife, so the idea fits the crew. A lineup this long also promises plenty of different flavours.

The beat bounces on a deep log drum and clean percussion. Bright keys ripple on top while a heavy bass drives the pulse. It sounds ready for the tavern, so the speakers will earn their keep.

Natiey Lepaka opens with a relaxed, cheerful voice. His lead sets the pace for the guests.

The features then take turns, each with a different flavour. Some voices run smooth, while others lean rougher and louder. The lyrics seem to celebrate drinks, friends and good times, and the chorus gives the crowd something to shout back.

Five guests could turn a track into a mess, but the groove keeps everyone in line. It plays like a tavern table where everybody gets a turn to talk.
