Returning home to Enugu, Igbo rap pioneer Phyno drops a new solo record “Healing,” and the title alone hints at something more introspective than his usual output.

Phyno has blended hip-hop with highlife and the Igbo language throughout his career, a formula that has seen him create hits like “Ghost Mode” and “Fada Fada.” His last album “Full Time Job” was an exploration of the idea that greatness is an ongoing effort, and “Healing” feels like a continuation of that same reflective mind.

Phyno, aka Chibuzo Nelson Azubuike, is still one of the clearest bridges between modern rap and deep-rooted African tradition. His music reaches much farther than Nigeria, too, to the African diaspora and Lusophone audiences that appreciate his authenticity. Plus, that cross-cultural appeal has kept him relevant through multiple album cycles since “Something to Live For” in 2021.“Healing” is a standalone single and not part of a bigger project, which allows Phyno to speak freely without the context of an album shaping the conversation.
