Zambian rapper and singer Sampa The Great opens a new chapter with “Ukwamba (To Start),” a visual prelude shot in Zambia ahead of her forthcoming album “Nu Zamrock.”
The title translates to “to start,” and that framing fits perfectly. So “Sampa The Great Ukwamba” isn’t a conventional single so much as an entry point into a larger body of work, weaving together themes of bloodline and generational memory. The visual centers on a dialogue between Sampa and her uncle, George Kunda, connecting different versions of the artist to a shared family legacy that stretches across generations.
Nu Zamrock draws from Zamrock, the genre that fused Kalindula and psychedelic rock in 1970s Zambia, but Sampa isn’t treating it as pure nostalgia. That approach already surfaced on lead single “Simon Says,” which Ukwamba served as the visual introduction for.
Having built her career across Zambia, Australia and international stages since 2014, Sampa continues positioning her heritage as the foundation for where her sound goes next.
