SSSoundGawd dropped “Mamacita” this August, and the Nigerian DJ-turned-artist finally gets a record with his name up front, no features cluttering the credits.
Lilgeebeatz produced it. That matters more than it might sound like it should, because SSSoundGawd himself has spent years on the other side of that relationship – the guy behind the boards, not the guy on the mic. He’s threaded through half the Kilogbede Records catalogue this way: production work with Mavo, a guest verse on “Hey Mama” alongside Mavo and Joshua Baraka, another cameo on KRL’s “Jollof Rice.” Always present, rarely centered.
“MAMACITA” flips that. It’s a short record – deliberately so. No padding, no extended outro just to hit a runtime target. Whether that restraint comes from years of shaping other artists’ songs is hard to say for certain, but the fingerprints are there if you’re looking for them.
He’s not new to solo work, either. “SWAGGA” came before this one, part of the same quiet build toward a real solo catalogue. Kilogbede Records has clearly been positioning him for it. Mavo still anchors the label’s identity, but SSSoundGawd keeps inching toward his own lane, one single at a time.
So does “MAMACITA” land as a statement or just another entry in a growing list? Too early to say. But it’s the sound of a producer stepping out from behind the console – and so far, he seems comfortable there.
