Abuja-based Afro-fusion singer and producer Tay Iwar serves up an upbeat new record titled “DO YOUR THING” from his “WONDERFUL” EP. It is the second track on the project.
Tay Iwar, born Austin Iwar Jr., has spent years building his own corner of Nigerian music. He founded the Bantu Collective with his brothers, and his GEMINI album put him on a bigger stage. This time he leans toward the dance floor.
The producer drops a baile funk swing into the percussion. Cinematic strings and airy flutes float on top, while thumping bass synths keep the floor busy.
Tay Iwar starts with smooth sung lines before switching to a quick, low-pitched flow. Some bars land almost like a rap verse.
The lyrics mix Pidgin and English as he tells his lover to turn her pain into strength. Meanwhile, he admits he is done overthinking and has plans of his own. Time will tell, he keeps reminding her.
The mix of mood and movement makes the record easy to love. Tay Iwar stays experimental, yet the hook stays simple enough to sing back.
