Temper City turned a missed studio session into a career-launching single with “Self Aware,” a record that arrived almost by accident and then refused to leave the charts.
The Los Angeles-based trio of Israeli writer-producers, Eytan Peled, Chen Kordova and Aviv Barenholtz, had spent years crafting songs for other artists before deciding to step in front of the boards themselves. When a scheduled artist failed to show up for a session in late 2025, they used the time to cut “Self Aware” instead, and it became only the second song they had ever made together as a band .
What makes the record work is how familiar it sounds without feeling borrowed. The track leans on moody alt-rock textures that echo Cage the Elephant and The Neighbourhood, with Peled’s vocal carrying a weariness that suits the fraught-relationship theme . The band has said the song came together quickly, almost instinctively, because the three of them had developed a creative shorthand after five years of writing together for other people . That ease shows in the final product. Nothing sounds forced.
The rollout tells its own story. The band began teasing clips on TikTok in late January, filming themselves recording in the desert, and the snippets spread fast enough that they signed with indie label Thirty Knots before the song was even out . Once it landed, “Self Aware” climbed to No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart in just fourteen weeks, the quickest rise for a debut single since sombr in 2025 . It also made Temper City the first Israeli band to enter the Billboard Hot 100 .
Press play on “Self Aware” and tell me whether this accidental debut deserves the hype it has picked up.
