Ghanaian dancehall and Afrobeats superstar Wendy Shay strips everything back for an intimate acoustic medley of “Crazy Love” and “Too Late” as part of Audiomack’s Fine Tuned series.
The Fine Tuned format exists for exactly this reason. It pulls artists out of their studio comfort zone and puts them in front of a single instrument – no vocal layers, no digital polish, nowhere to hide. So when Wendy Shay steps into this session, the performance either holds or it doesn’t. But it holds completely.
The musical director keeps the arrangement deliberately sparse. Smooth grand piano chords carry the entire session without drums or synthesisers crowding the space. So her natural vocal range fills the room cleanly. What the original productions kept balanced across multiple elements now sits fully exposed – and that exposure works in her favour.
She opens with “Crazy Love” and brings a softer, more reflective quality to a record that originally carried more Afropop energy. Then the pivot into “Too Late” shifts the emotional temperature. Both songs deal with love at different stages – one seeking it, the other letting it go. Moving between them in a single session creates a narrative arc that neither record achieves alone.
West African music fans have always responded to this kind of performance. Because hearing a big voice over a piano tells you things about an artist that a full production never quite reveals. Wendy Shay uses this session to confirm what her catalogue has been suggesting all along – the voice behind the dancehall energy is genuinely strong enough to stand alone.
