DMW heavyweight Davido reunites with French-Malian star Aya Nakamura on his new single “Yaya.”
This isn’t their first time linking up either, Davido and Aya first teamed up back in 2018 on “Gang,” which went on to earn Gold certification in France. That history gives “Yaya” real weight since it’s not just a random pairing for clout. It’s sitting as the 10th track on his 13-song album “Oriadé,” which is stacked with names across different countries and genres.
The beat blends Davido’s usual Afrobeats bounce with French pop textures pulled from Aya’s side of the world. That mix gives the track a sound that doesn’t sit fully in one lane. Nothing about the production feels forced despite combining two very different musical worlds.
Davido comes through pleading on this one, singing about being on his knees trying to prove himself to someone who isn’t convinced yet. He mixes Yoruba, Igbo and English throughout, keeping that same code-switching style he’s known for. It’s a familiar sound from him, but the emotional urgency feels a bit more raw here.
Aya Nakamura answers back in French, calling out someone who talks too much while acting like they’ve got nothing to prove yet. Her verse adds real tension to the record, playing off Davido’s pleading energy with her own sharper edge. That back and forth gives “Yaya” its push and pull dynamic.
The song works because both artists bring their full identity instead of softening it for crossover appeal. Nothing about the language switch feels like a gimmick here. That authenticity is what makes their reunion feel earned instead of convenient.
