Veteran South African Maskandi artist Mashelela delivers his most expansive project yet with “Imbongolo Yishende” – a 17-track album spanning one hour and thirty-one minutes of pure Zulu cultural storytelling.
The title carries social commentary weight. “Imbongolo Yishende” speaks directly to the absurdity of fools who act with undeserved authority – and Mashelela does not soften that message anywhere across the runtime.
The production stays rooted in what Maskandi demands. Rapid finger-picked guitar leads, steady rhythm patterns, grooving basslines, and crisp traditional percussion drive the album throughout. Bright concertina accents swirl across the arrangements and give the project its organic, live-room energy. So the album never sounds like a studio construction. It sounds like a community gathering with a specific storyteller at the centre.
Track one “FUSEGI UYANQUMA MBHEM,” sets the tone immediately – five minutes of aggressive guitar picking and sharp social observation. Then “Hamba Sathane” follows with a more emotionally reflective performance that shows range without breaking the project’s character. By track 16 “I-Cuddling,” Mashelela even stretches into romantic territory, proving the album is not one-dimensional despite its sharp cultural edge.
Themes of perseverance, community wisdom, family, and everyday street realities thread through all 17 tracks. Yet Mashelela never makes the writing feel heavy. His velvet-toned delivery and call-and-response harmonies keep each track moving at a pace that rewards repeat listening.
