Nigeria’s unique Rap heavyweight Phyno teams up with Oxlade on Magret, a melody-rich cut from his album Let That Sink In.
On Magret, Phyno’s street power meets Oxlade’s recognisable falsetto, per one blog. Oxlade also leads the hook, which centres on romantic passion and feminine charm. Phyno keeps his raspy Igbo-English flow, so the record mixes rap and Afropop. Six9ja calls the link-up irresistible.
Delicate guitar riffs and snappy shakers sit over a rolling, fluid bassline. Clean engineering lets every vocal run and rap bar cut through. The pace is mid-tempo and joyful, so it suits late-night drives. Penthauze and MAD Solutions share the copyright line on the album.
Oxlade is one of seven guests on Let That Sink In. DancehallMag notes that Oxlade and Fireboy DML both built their names on melody. The album is billed as a return to rap on a studio project, though melody clearly runs through it. Healing and Beautiful came out first as singles, while Uzo Ano with Flavour arrived earlier in the year.
Beautiful, also romantic, opens with a spoken passage from Nancy Isime. Kezyklef and NiphKeys produced Beautiful, which runs four minutes. Full Time Job, his last album, came before this run. Roll Magret on your next late-night drive and tell us in the comments – who owns the hook, Phyno or Oxlade?
