Ghanaian global icon Black Sherif drops “Sun Sherif Vol. 1,” his most sonically diverse EP yet, arriving September 4 under Road Boys Association and Empire.
The project sits at a specific crossroads in his career. Coming after “Iron Boy” – the sophomore album that confirmed his status as one of Africa’s biggest artists – “Sun Sherif” does not try to match that project’s scale. Instead it moves in a different direction entirely. The sound is more personal, the collaborator list tighter, and the emotional range wider than anything he has released before. Because an artist who has already proven commercial dominance earns the right to follow his instincts rather than repeat his formula.
Joker Nharnah runs production across most of the EP – the same trusted creative partner behind much of Black Sherif’s catalogue since “Kwaku the Traveller.” But the sound shifts noticeably from “Iron Boy.” Deep sub-bass, striking guitar melodies, and emotive synths build an atmosphere that moves between Trap Soul vulnerability and hard-hitting Afro-Drill aggression.
So the EP never sits in one mood for too long. “Expresso” opens assertively. “Run Around” pulls inward. “Forever” with AratheJay turns toward love. “Love Again” with Full Blown closes on another collaborative note.
The only Ghanaian artist to be crowned Artiste of the Year at the TGMAs twice deserves a project that says something new – and “Sun Sherif Vol. 1” does exactly that.
