Botswana-born, South Africa-based jazz pianist Bokani Dyer pulls “Thembisa” from his forthcoming album “Traditions,” bringing in vocalist Phoebe Mgxaji for a reimagined version of the track.
Dyer met Mgxaji while teaching part-time at Wits University, and their connection carries through clearly here. So “Bokani Dyer Thembisa” isn’t a random pairing built for streaming numbers. It grew out of an existing mentorship, which explains why the chemistry between piano and vocal feels so natural rather than forced.
