DJ Tunez and Wizkid reunite on “STATE OF MIND,” a laid-back Afrofusion single that has passed seven million Spotify streams.
The song is calm, reflective, and easy to move to. TheCable says Wizkid delivers his usual melodic, smooth lines over electric instrumentals, and other write-ups describe themes of peace, self-awareness, and enjoying life at your own pace. Kemuel adds vocals on the refrain, which gives the chorus a call-and-response feel. The track runs three minutes and 12 seconds, and BT Music Worldwide released it. Nothing about it is rushed, so the mood stays unhurried.
The two have a long history. DJ Tunez signed to Starboy Entertainment in 2015 and has served as Wizkid’s official DJ. They worked together on “Gbese,” “Cool Me Down,” and “Caution,” and Tunez helped shape “Iskaba,” which became one of the biggest African pop records of its year. A decade later, “STATE OF MIND” still sounds like two collaborators who know each other’s rhythm.
The single also leads into a bigger story. DJ Tunez is building toward his EP “In Tunez We Trust Vol. 1,” which features Wizkid, FOLA, Seyi Vibez, ODUMODUBLVCK, and others. “STATE OF MIND” works as an early signpost for that project, showing a smoother, more melodic side of what is coming.
