South African R&B singer-songwriter Elaine delivers Risky, a track taken from her debut EP Elements and produced by Clxrity.
Elaine says Risky is about not always having the right response when emotions hit at the wrong time. Many listeners assume it speaks to a lover, but she has said it speaks to herself. Elaine Mukheli wrote it, and it runs 3:02. Listings class it as contemporary R&B, while she is based in Pretoria.
Clxrity produced it, and the two attended the same high school. Elaine recorded the EP at Elyzée’s garage or in Clxrity’s dormitory. She was in law school at Wits then, so the sessions fit around lectures.
The record reached multi-platinum status in South Africa, with a 3x Platinum certification. Elements itself earned a platinum certification. Fellow Elements track You’re the One did even better, at seven times platinum. A video followed once she signed with Columbia Records, and it carries a dark tone.
Elements also made her the most streamed South African woman artist on Apple Music and Spotify. Elaine later cut a stripped-back Apple Music Home Session version with piano and strings. That one runs 3:54, while Vk released a remix featuring her. Listen to Risky again and tell us in the comments – is it a love song or a note to self?
