Fireboy DML confronts spiritual enemies on “BY FIRE!,” the second track on “ZUKO!” and a critic’s favourite on the album.
The song steps straight into spiritual warfare. Fireboy uses biblical figures and the familiar prayer phrase “die by fire,” known from Nigerian prayer-ministry language, to face the forces he believes could hold him back. One review links the idea to the late-night prayer style taught by Dr D.K. Olukoya, where the enemy is not of this world. So the track sounds like a prayer set to music, and it treats fire as protection and fuel at once.
The writing fits the album’s wider story. “DEAR FATHER” with Judah Earl opens with fear of losing his place and a plea for guidance. “BY FIRE!” then answers with defiance. A reviewer singled out the best bar as an understated line near the top, where he tells nobody to say he could ever fail. That small moment gives the song its confidence, and it explains why the same critic named it a favourite alongside “KILOWI” and “FIGHTING.”
“ZUKO!” takes its name from the fiery prince in “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” whose arc covers exile, identity, and redemption. “BY FIRE!” is the first strong sign of that fire. It is solo, so the voice stays personal.
Afropop fans often hear Fireboy as a lover boy, but this track shows another side. Faith, pressure, and ambition sit together, and he treats them with care.
Say your own prayer over “BY FIRE!” and tell us – what are you asking heaven to burn away?
