South African deep house and soulful Amapiano pioneer Gaba Cannal drops “uYena Pt.1,” a five-track EP that sits as one of his most refined bodies of work yet.
The name “uYena” – which translates to “It Is Him” or “That Is The One” in isiZulu – carries a specific declarative energy that runs through the project’s entire sonic identity. Gaba Cannal is not introducing himself on this EP. He is making a statement about exactly who he is and what his music represents at this point in his career. The “Pt.1” tag also signals there is more coming – so this release opens a new chapter rather than closing one.
The production architecture across the five tracks is the project’s biggest selling point. Deep rolling log drum sequences, warm sub-bass drops, shimmering grand piano chords, silky Rhodes progressions, and rich atmospheric synth pads all combine into the kind of soulful Amapiano sound that Gaba Cannal built his reputation on. But “uYena Pt.1” feels more refined than anything in his previous catalogue. Every element sits precisely where it should within the wide-spectrum studio mix.
The collaborator selection also shows real curatorial instinct. Maleh, JazzyGMusique, Meedy, The Bless, The Myth, DJ Stokie, Nicksa, and Eva Mdlalose all contribute across the five tracks – each bringing specific vocal and production textures that keep the EP moving without losing its cohesive identity.
