KwaZulu-Natal maskandi multi-instrumentalist Ntencane teams up with KaMaphanga on Engalobolile, a five-minute cut from his 16-track album Awuyiphumuze.
Ntencane’s real name is Senzo Zondo, and Wawuthembeni is among his best-known songs. Blogs point to emotive storytelling and guitar riffs in his sound. Engalobolile runs 5:01, so it has room to stretch. Blogs call him a multi-instrumentalist and describe the feel as calming yet lively.
It sits at track 9 of 16 on Awuyiphumuze, with Ukhethe Mina at track 5. Uwedwa Yini Kuye features Mzukulu, while Musa Ukusilinga features Izingane Zoma. Iphupho Lami is track 15, close to the end of the tracklist. Amakhaya Aboshiwe and Enxiweni Elinethuna are also on the project.
Blogs call KaMaphanga an award-winning artist who adds a verse here. One listing hears a blend of maskandi and Afro soul, though another files it as straight maskandi. Enemy and Family is another title on the same project.
Ntencane’s catalogue also holds Ujesu Yedwa and Nguye Lo, which has an interpreted video. Khulula Inhliziyo and Uthando Lwethu are other titles in his catalogue, so there is plenty to explore.
Shwele Baba features Nompumelelo Sibisi. Fire up Engalobolile and tell us in the comments – does maskandi hit harder when the story comes first?
