South African Maskandi storyteller Shanela turns to life’s setbacks on “Konakele,” the fourth track on the five-song “Obaby Mama” EP.

The title points to things that go wrong, break down, or take an unexpected turn. Shanela builds the song around that feeling. Early write-ups describe self-reflective folk storytelling about relationship instability, surprise betrayal, and struggles at home. The mood stays calm instead of bitter, because the song focuses on the quiet resolve you need when plans fall apart.

The sound stays traditional. Acoustic instruments carry the Zulu lyrics, and the delivery is commanding and rich. At four minutes and 41 seconds, the song gives the story room to unfold. Nothing in the arrangement gets in the way of the words.

It also sits well inside the EP. “Obaby Mama” with Nunu and Swidi wabantwana comes right before it, and “Owesbili” with the same guests follows. Together with “Inkomo” and “Ngingadlulela phambili,” the project covers family duty, cultural pride, and the push to keep going. “Konakele” is the reflective middle of that set.

Maskandi has always dealt with real life, and this record keeps that habit. It speaks to anyone who has watched things fall apart and still stood back up.
