Durban-born Maskandi and Afro-Soul artist Umafikizolo delivers a 12-track album titled “Amanyala,” and it arrives as one of the year’s most complete traditional South African projects.
The title track sits at position four on the album and sets the emotional tone for what surrounds it. “Amanyala” blends traditional Maskandi rhythms with contemporary storytelling in a way that feels both culturally faithful and sonically current. Umafikizolo describes his world as Zulu guitar soul – raw fingerpicking, deep isiZulu tales of love, struggle, and pride. Every track on this album lives inside that world.
What makes “Amanyala” interesting as a full project is the range it covers across 12 tracks. From the love-driven “Ngamuhle” and “Wangenzu Muntu” to the more reflective “Role Model” and the culturally pointed title track, Umafikizolo moves through multiple emotional registers without losing his signature sound. His previous EP “Uyoncengwa Unyoko” and single work with collaborators like Khuthuza already built a foundation. But “Amanyala” is his most complete statement yet – 12 tracks that give the full picture of what he does and why it connects with Maskandi audiences across KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.
