Mavin Records superstar Ayra Starr delivers her third studio album, “Starrgirl,” a 16-track project that affirms her place among Afropop’s most inventive voices.
The scope alone sets this apart from her earlier work. Where “19 & Dangerous” introduced her and “The Year I Turned 21” deepened that introduction, “Starrgirl” arrives as something more settled. Ayra told the Evening Standard she was moving away from being “obsessed with being an album artist,” and that shift shows here. The tracklist opens with “Dangerous,” a deliberate nod back to her debut era, and closes on the outward-facing Danny Ocean remix of “Hot Body” rather than a grand ballad finale.
The features tell their own story. Wizkid appears on “Gimme Dat,” Rema joins her on “Who’s Dat Girl,” and Leon Thomas finally steps in front of the mic on “Pressure” after writing for her back in 2024. Then the album stretches further outward – Theodora brings French pop energy to “Ms. Paper,” and ZAYN’s appearance on “Heaven Baby” became one of the most talked-about pairings of the year, moving Ayra to tears when she first heard the finished record.
What holds “Starrgirl” together is her recurring declaration on “Dance”: “Feels good to be who I am.” That confidence runs through the record’s more vulnerable moments too, from the prayerful “Letter To God” to the grateful “Treasure.” Sixteen tracks, one clear thesis – an artist no longer proving she belongs, simply living inside that truth.
