South African Maskandi and Afro-pop artist Shuni waseMzini returns with his sophomore studio album “Umzukulu uyighost,” distributed globally through Virgin Music Group South Africa.
The title carries a double meaning that makes the concept immediately interesting. “Umzukulu” is a tribute to frequent collaborator Mzukulu – so the album honours a creative relationship rather than just announcing a project. But “iGhost” adds a layer on top of that. In South African street culture, calling someone a ghost means they move on a level most people cannot touch. So the album title essentially crowns both the artist and his collaborator in one phrase.
That kind of conceptual thinking sets “Umzukulu uyighost” apart from standard Maskandi releases before you even press play. Shuni waseMzini fuses raw acoustic Maskandi guitar work with Afro-pop touches throughout the 12-track body of work. So the album does not sit entirely inside one genre. It moves between tradition and modernity without losing its cultural roots.
The expressive guitar work runs through most of the project as the emotional backbone. Yet the Afro-pop influences keep individual tracks accessible beyond just the Maskandi listener base. Because the best genre-blending albums work when neither side dominates – and this one maintains that balance consistently.
Collaborators Shenge Wasehlankosi on “Ngizomshaya Phansi” and Mjolisi on “Stufuza” add variety to the tracklist. But solo cuts like “Ismilo Sami,” “Inhlupheko,” and “Why” show Shuni waseMzini is confident carrying the album on his own too.
