South African music icon Brenda Fassie is back in the conversation as Rivic Jazz drops a fresh remix of her classic record “Mama I’m Sorry (Rivic Jazz Remix).
The original version of Mama I’m Sorry appeared on Fassie’s 2002 album Myekeleni, which moved over a million copies across South Africa and beyond. Sello “Chicco” Twala handled production on that project, and the song itself stood out as one of the more emotionally raw moments on the album. Years later, it still connects.
Rivic Jazz is a Mpumalanga-born producer and audio engineer who studied sound engineering in Johannesburg. He has carved out a niche reworking both classic and contemporary records under the Travel Power Records imprint. His remix of Sankomota’s Now Or Never showed he knows how to update older material without losing what made it special.
That same approach applies here. Pulling Brenda Fassie’s voice into a new production context is a bold move, but the legacy of Mama I’m Sorry gives it room to land.
