Flavour and the London Recording Orchestra bring orchestral highlife to one of his most spiritually charged records on “Virtuous Woman (Live)” – and the result is deeply moving.
The live recording pairs sweeping violin passages and warm cello lines with subtle brass accents that sit over persistent drum rhythms. So the arrangement never loses the highlife heartbeat underneath all the classical texture. That balance is everything here. Because orchestral reimaginings of African records often sacrifice cultural identity in favour of European sophistication – but this one refuses to make that trade.
Producer Myles shapes a slow-burning instrumental bed that gives Flavour room to breathe rather than compete with the arrangement. His vocal projection carries the same warmth and conviction that made the original version resonate so widely. But the live setting strips away studio polish and replaces it with something rawer and more immediate. So the emotion comes through differently – closer, more present, more human.
“Virtuous Woman” as a concept also earns the orchestral treatment more than most records would. A song built around celebrating and honouring womanhood gains extra weight when surrounded by world-class session musicians playing in real time. The reverence in the live arrangement matches the reverence in the writing. Both are pulling in the same direction.
Within the “ORCHESTRATED” EP, this sits alongside “Ada Ada” and “Game Changer” as one of three records that had earned enough goodwill from their original versions to survive this kind of reimagining. But “Virtuous Woman (Live)” may be the most emotionally complete of the three.
