Kevin Parker’s Tame Impala project pulls back the neon and gets rawer on “Loser,” the second single from his “Deadbeat” album.
The song found new life recently too. It’s now soundtracking a scene in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” and that placement pushed it straight back onto the iTunes charts months after its original drop. Parker teased the whole thing with cryptic posters and a Joe Keery-starring video, and the mystery clearly paid off. This one hits different from his usual dreamy catalogue, and that’s the point.
Production trades his signature synth-first haze for something heavier this time. Thick guitar chords carry the melody, giving the track an almost aggressive edge compared to older cuts like “The Less I Know The Better.” Psychedelic keys still show up underneath, but they support the riff now instead of leading it. That shift grounds the whole record in a way his earlier work never quite did.
Parker’s falsetto stays intact through it all, delivering lines about closure and self-sabotage with real bite. “Tried to correct it, I think I wrecked it” lands as the emotional gut-punch, admitting to ruining something he couldn’t quite fix. His repeated declaration of being a loser turns almost defiant by the end, not defeated.
Loser works because Parker lets the darker edges show instead of smoothing them over like usual.
